I apparently have no sound at all. In the process of trying to install Totem and VLC (anything at all to make sound with) I began to get an error message at the end of the install that reads:

E: dahdi: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: asterisk: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: asterisk-mobile: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

I didn't know what any of that was (I'm a bit of a noob) and found that it has something to do with telephony. I don't think that I use anything like that on this machine. It is an old box that I spend a great deal of effort in keeping productive and can't seem to give up for sentimental reasons. It's a Compaq DeskPro EN. Sound and Video on board. Intel, I believe. Can't tell much more than that.

I've searched the web and tried everything I could find, which was precious little.

Any suggestions?

No idea from what you posted.

What repositoreis do you have enabled ?

Did you try:

Code:
apt-get update

Then

Code:
apt-get install -f
